Mrs. MaryEdna Russell's Happenings

 Welcome to 2nd Grade!
I am so excited to get the year started!  We will have a very busy but fun year of learning!  This is my 27th year teaching at OLMC!  I was an OLMC graduate many years ago and have 3 children who have also graduated from the school.  OLMC is home to me and I hope to make your children feel the same strong connection to the school and church.
We will begin the school year with a review of materials covered in 1st Grade.  We move quickly through this material.  New topics will be introduced during our subjects during the 3rd week of school.  I move slowly during the first month so that students get to know me and I in turn get to see their strengths and favorite subjects.
Second graders are off to a great start!
We will be taking our first tests during this week.  You will see practice worksheets in Language and Math.  Take a few minutes to review with your child and that will set a good study habit.   Our Spelling and Reading tests will be given on Fridays.  Activity packets will come home during the week giving you an idea of our lesson content.  Reading homework should be seen 3 out of the 4 nights.  Look for books Monday through Thursday.  Their hardbound book will come home on Thursday evening.
Religion tests will normally fall on Fridays also.  We will have a pull out page each Monday to let you know what the chapter will be covering.  Students will bring home the chapter on Thursday so that you can see their pretest and class material.  This also gives you the opportunity to study for that test.
Please feel free to stop by if you ever have questions about Second Grade.  I look forward to meeting you and working with you and your child!

Catholic Schools Week
Jan. 27th - Feb. 1st

Second Grade will be enjoying all the CSW activities this week.   Kick off the week with our Student Mass on Sunday, the Book Fair in the Holy Family room.  Breakfast refreshments will be provided that morning.
We will begin our school week with the Mad Scientist Day!  During the day we will be creating a few wild experiments in class.  Students will be dressed up as a Scientist and bringing in a small empty bottle for a class project.  We will be continuing that theme throughout the week.  PTO has plans to make ice cream in a bag with all the students on Monday!  They will love that!
Lots of free dress days, Science experiments, Reading each day to meet our 120,000 minute goal for the school, and Pay It Forward acts of kindness will be incorporated into the school days.  We will continue to Raise the Standards in Education!

Jan. 31st, 2013

Second Grade has had a great CSW!  We have enjoyed several science experiments, stopped, dropped and read in hopes of reaching 110,000 minutes!  We are Paying it Forward in our homes, school and community.  Lots of fun and crazy dress-up days have kept us in stitches too!
We will begin practice for Reconciliation this week.  Reconciliation will take place on Feb. 7th at 6:30 that evening.  Students will be acting out the bible story "The Forgiving Father" that evening.
Our class has gained a new smile this week!  We have added a new girl to our count!  Mahkaylah has transferred into our room and seems to fit in just fine!
CSW will conclude Friday with a student assembly at 2:00.  If we have reached our reading goal, Mrs. Dreyer will be slimmed along with 2 other faculty members!  This will be a wild and crazy way to end the week.

Mad Scientists
 2013

Feb.10, 2013

Second graders did a wonderful job with their Reconciliation this week!  I was very happy for them as they prepared for this special holy step in their faith walk.
The school's major fund raising event will take place this week.  Tuesday's Mardi Gras will be held in the gym with food, games and fun for all ages.  Each child will be eligible to be crowned Prince or Princess for the evening.  Raffles will be drawn during the night also.  Don't forget to send a sack lunch for that day.  The cafeteria will be closed on Tuesday.
Ash Wednesday all students will attend Mass at 8:15.  Religion class this week will have the students looking at actions they can change or strenghten during Lent.  The students will attend Stations of the Cross every other Friday afternoon at 2:15 during Lent.  I will post those dates in the News Notes.
We can't forget Valentine's Day is on Thursday.  We will celebrate that afternoon!
Thank you to all the families who donated books for the classroom.  The book fair was a success.  Many books and series will be placed in our library with the funds raised from this event!

March 4th, 2013

Early dismissal and free dress Monday due to the faculty meeting at 2:00.  We are beginning the 4th Quarter today!  Report cards will be sent out on Thursday.  If they have completed their Feb. Book-It form they can turn those in through this Friday.  March slips will be sent home on Monday.
Second graders will be preparing the Thursday morning mass.  Readings and job assignments will go home on Monday.  If your child has a reading please practice at home each night and have them bring their readings back to school each day.
Religion classes have the children preparing for their First Communion.  I will be sending out those Secret Letter notes this week.  I hope that gives you plenty of time to get them out to family and friends before their big day, May 5th!  The letters will be given to them on that Friday Practice.
We attend the Stations of the Cross every other Friday during Lent.  The stations are at 2:15, please attend if possible.
Several students have used up their glue stick supplies.  You might check with your child to see if they are in need.  We have plenty of pencils!  Thank you for the tissues!  We continue to go through them rapidly!  I am hoping the Spring Break will end the flu bug cycle!
It has been awesome to see the interest in the AR program!  Many students are stepping up their reading and AR test taking!  We have students with totals of 95, 63, 53 total points.  They shop every third Thursday of the month!  I am encouraging them to step up to level books of their ability now.
     Have a great week!
